A Ferguson police officer accidentally shot his own arm during a routine patrol on Saturday night because he thought the arm was attached to a potential offender and not his own slightly-overweight body.
The unfortunate incident occurred while the unnamed officer was in pursuit of two suspects on suspicion of burglary. The chase ended down a dark alley and as the officer moved slowly through the area, checking doors and windows, an arm came out of the shadows towards him and tried to grab his weapon.
The officer immediately opened fire and hit the assailant’s forearm, tearing through flesh but leaving the bones intact.
Suddenly, the officer felt a sharp, piercing pain in his right arm and that’s when the penny dropped. The officer had mistaken his own arm for that of a deadly criminal.
He then tried to call for backup but he only had one arm available and that one was holding his gun.
Passers-by came to the officer’s assistance as he lay on the ground in an excruciating amount of pain, but for some strange reason it took them four hours to call the ambulance.
After receiving treatment the officer made a statement in which he said: “I’m glad I shot my own arm because it’s better to be safe than sorry. If I stopped to gauge the situation with a clear head before quickly assessing the correct course of action then I might not be here now.
“Instead, I did the right thing by firing wildly and hopefully in the direction of the threat which, unfortunately for me, turned out to be a part of my own body.
“I’m glad I did the right thing. What if that arm belonged to a violent street thug or a serial killer like Charles Manson or even an Islamic terrorist? I am happy I made the right choice in the end.”
Ferguson PD are now considering presenting the injured officer with their highest medal for bravery.
